Jazz
Out of the Gallion
a quartet formed by Martin (clarinet) with
Bert Schilperoort (soprano sax) John Cherry (guitar) and Jeremy Kahn
(bass) to play the music of the punchy small groups of the swing era-
Sidney Bechet, Sammy Price and Mezz Mezzrow. Infectious
swing and lively interplay between the horns make this a creative
ensemble as well as providing attractive music for functions.
This Quartet plays regularly at the Elm Tree in Cambridge.
Mingusology
a rip-roaring
9 piece band playing the blues infused and exciting music of Charles Mingus, had its first highly successful performance in November 2005 at
the Plough Jazz Club in London and in Cambridge at Jazz at Johns. A smaller ensemble played at C Venues at the Edinburgh
Fringe in August 2006. Martin has 'arranged' classic Mingus works for
this large ensemble with the objective of preserving the Mingus elements of
surprise, danger, commitment and spontaneity. The ensemble
has included Nick Weldon (piano) Malcolm Earl Smith (trombone) Josh Kemp
(tenor sax) Adam and Alex Waldmann (sax and drums) and Mick Coady
(bass). The most recent (and riotous) gig was for
the MehrClef showcase at the 606 Club in Chelsea.
Bert Schilperoort Quartet
an inventive jazz quartet headed by
Bert Schilperoort (drums) with Jeremy Kahn (guitar) using, exploring and
extending the standard jazz repertoire, playing at venues in Cambridge.
Harmony in Harlem
a band using the Ellington line up of the
golden years and playing the classic arrangements of the 30s and 40s
(mostly unpublished) which have been researched and transcribed by
leader Mike Kilpatrick. This is a wonderful fund of
unexplored music. Many were written for the solo clarinet of
Barney Bigard or Jimmy Hamilton, the role Martin fulfils in the band.
Function music
Martin Kemp Jazz and Swing
Martin plays regularly at weddings,
parties, receptions and other functions providing live music both
background and for dancing, including music based on jazz standards,
latin influences, funk and blues with a highly talented array of musical
colleagues, including Josh Kemp (saxophone), John Cherry (guitar) and
much sought after vocalist Ruth Applin, in ensembles ranging from duo to
sextet.
Cambridge Blue
an extrovert quintet led by Trevor Barlow (alto sax) which plays jazz
standards for weddings, parties and functions.
Classical
Whiteacre Clarinets
A clarinet quartet with Phyllis
Champion, Peter Fisher and Amelia Oldfield,
playing a varied repertoire of classical originals and arrangements as
well as lighter music for functions.
Composition and
Arrangement
Further post-graduate studies;
continuing compositions and arrangements, particularly for clarinet
quartet, clarinet choir and jazz ensemble; cataloguing and publishing
existing library of arrangements.
